Happy New Year of the Ox!

Did you know?
Did you know that
The Chinese New Year celebration can last for up to 1 month? However, some only
celebrate the first 3 days. One week before the start of the celebration, it is
customary for one to clean their house thoroughly and on a specific date to
conduct the new year. Afterwards, a god will go around each house to check if
it is clean or not and report to the other gods what people have been up to in
the previous year and if the houses have been cleaned properly or not. Oranges and chocolate biscuits are left
outside homes as a sign that the cleaning is complete. In addition to this,
many offer prayers to a range of gods and ancestors as well as exchange red envelopes
filled with money amongst each other.

The food shared
during this celebration is also incredibly special:
· Noodles are eaten as a symbol of long life.
· King prawns represents luck and happiness.
· Red food in general as a symbol of luck while
green food symbolises wealth and prosperity.

Every year begins
with a different animal from the Chinese Zodiac Signs which are:

· The Rat
· The Ox
· The Tiger
· The Rabbit
· The Dragon
· The Snake
· The Horse
· The Goat
· The Monkey
· The Rooster
· The Dog
· The Pig.
The legend is that
a long time ago, all 12 of these animals participated in a race. This race
determined the order in which these animals would appear on our calendar. The
Ox was supposed to be first, however, since the Rat was small and was unable to
swim, it jumped on the Ox’s back for the majority of the race and once it was
close enough to the finish line, it jumped off the Ox’s back and ran to the
finish line before the Ox could get there first.
Each of these
animals comes with their own traits and characteristics which not only affects
people but the way in which the year will unfold.
Since the Chinese
New Year follows the moon cycle, the date fluctuates each year. Yet, it still
always falls between 21st of January and 20th of February. When comes new
year, they wish each other Gõngxī fācái
which translates to “may you be rich” and is pronounced: gong-sshee
faa-tseye . However, this greeting is usually reserved to friends and family.
Whereas, Xīnnián kuàilè which is pronounced sshin-nyen kwhy-ler means Happy New Year and would
usually be said to Strangers and Acquaintances. Many countries
around the world celebrate the Chinese New Year including China where this
celebration originated. Amongst them are: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, North
Korea, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam where they observe a national
holiday on the actual new year’s day. However, despite
this not a public holiday in the UK, Canada or United stated, due to the
Georgian calendar it is still widely celebrated in these countries. Which is
why some businesses might close early or not open at all in areas closer to you
until the celebration ends.

Nonetheless, we at
LaCongolaise would like to wish you all,

Xīnnián kuàilè!
